A Stroll Down Memory Lane: Mariah Carey, Rockefeller Center, 2016

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, everyone! I have a gift for you.

Picture this: you are at your least capable in performing a song you are famously known for. Regardless, you decide to please the audience for just one night because everyone truly relies on you to spread the joy. Counting decades of success, an endless stream of royalties that make its way to your bank account, and shelves full awards that prove your high status in pop culture history; the only thought that grazes your mind says, “Why not? Just for one night.”

The moment you stand on stage, right in your element, everything declines into a downward spiral and the only option from here is to keep going. Would you allow this performance to negatively affect you once the tabloids and tweets come swarming in? Mariah Carey sure didn’t.

In December of 2016, Mariah Carey found herself in a vocal mess while performing the everlasting modern holiday anthem All I Want For Christmas Is You at the Rockefeller Center in New York.

Unfortunately, it left a sour taste in the mouths of all the viewers who were lucky enough to witness it. For those who have tried searching for the full clip on YouTube, you won’t have any luck there. Not to mention the exclusive edit that isolates Carey’s vocals to show exactly what she sounded like underneath the instrumental track to cover most of the good, bad and pitchy. Thank God dailymotion has it, which has been presented to you at the end. Stay Tuned!

Since the year of that performance, I can’t help myself when looking for it online just to get a good laugh in to kickstart the most wonderful time of the year.

It has become a new tradition that I never thought would be the blessing I needed. Although I, myself, am not a Lamb (an MC stan), there is no denying my fondness and appreciation for the talented legend behind favorited hits such as Fantasy, Heartbreaker, Vision of Love, Obsessed, Touch My Body, the list goes on.

Mariah Carey’s only response to the whole ordeal was the same thing we tell ourselves when we get broken up with, a test is failed, or a friend is lost: “Shit happens.

You think this Aries queen is going to beat herself up over a single performance of one of the best-selling, longest lasting, and overplayed Christmas tracks ever? Hell no. That’s what I truly admire about this whole. There are so many people (including me) who will allow an embarrassing moment to float over them until an even bigger one comes to push it out of the way. While all her lambs will argue that she’s making more money than us (which is true), I prefer to argue for her tenacity and acceptance of imperfection. Carey simply wakes up after a long eight hours of sleep. She goes on to smile about her day, unbothered, and ultimately making more money than us.

At the end of the day, we put so much expectations into our favorite superstars that we end up forgetting about their humanness, so that when they mess up we feel upset. Ever thought that it’s a result of you upsetting yourself?

As we close this decade with Mariah Carey’s Christmas album on repeat, always remember to be kind, take it easy, and continue spreading cheer EVEN AFTER CHRISTMAS!
